Congressman Polis' Youth Advisory Council meets throughout the year to discuss the issues, current events, and legislation on the minds of Colorado’s young people. The Council is comprised of up to 28 high school students appointed by my office -- two students per school district -- who represent the geographic, cultural, and ideological diversity of Colorado's Second Congressional District. The Council term is for the 112th Congress, which ends on 12/31/2012.
In addition to members-at-large, the Council will be comprised of:
- Facilitator, Sue Windels, District Education Advocate;
- Two Co-chairs, elected by participants; and,
- A Secretary, elected by participants.
Council Member Responsibilities
The official responsibilities for the Youth Advisory Council include but are not limited to the following:
- Attend meetings, currently held once a month on Saturday afternoons in the Boulder office. If a member has to miss a meeting, the facilitator should be notified.
- Decide on meeting agendas, format, and frequency. Telephone conferencing will be available to those unable to travel to specific meetings.
- Read documents provided by the District Office on specific issue areas so that all are able to contribute to the discussion and help develop ideas for federal policy. Also, participants will be asked to share information they have gathered independently with the rest of the council.
- Members are bound to the same Congressional Rules of Ethics as the Congressional Office. Orientation will include additional information. Individual participants and/or the Advisory Council as a whole cannot represent themselves as members of Congressional staff or speak on behalf of the Congressman.
- This Advisory Council will operate in a manner that is inclusive and respectful of the diversity that each member brings to the group.
