Bitcoin Event Pulls in Jared Polis, Bob Goodlatte, Mick Mulvaney
By Anne L. Kim
Jared Polis and two other House members who have shown a piqued interest in digital currency are hosting an event on the topic Tuesday evening in a House office building.
Polis, D-Colo., Reps. Robert W. Goodlatte, R-Va., and Mick Mulvaney, R-S.C., are the big names associated with BitCoin Demo Day from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Rayburn House Office Building. Companies like Expedia, which earlier this year announced it would accept bitcoins to book hotels, and bitcoin payment processor BitPay will be there, according to a news release.
According to a Polis aide, the event will cover the basics of digital currencies and their current and potential future uses. And it’ll give lawmakers a chance to ask questions and have experts address concerns, according to the aide.
Earlier this year Polis — not long after the Federal Election Commission voted to allow bitcoin contributions to political action committees — announced he’d take such contributions for his re-election campaign.
Goodlatte, the Judiciary Committee chairman and a longtime player in tech issues on Capitol Hill, was there in April with Polis and others when a bitcoin ATM was demonstrated on Capitol Hill.
And Mulvaney, a conservative who is part of the Tea Party Caucus in the House, said “the whole thing bears watching” after a hearing in April by the Small Business Committee. (He also sits on the Financial Services panel.)
According to the release, the event will bring “industry experts to the Capitol to discuss the basics of digital currencies and demonstrate recent developments in this exciting new frontier.”
