Rep. Polis leads bi-partisan effort urging house leadership to fully fund PILT

Washington, Sept. 28: Today, Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) led a bi-partisan group of 95 Members of Congress, alongside Rep. Chris Stewart (R-Utah), urging House leadership to secure full funding for the Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) Program.

“I am fortunate to serve a district that is home to acres and acres of majestic public lands,” said Polis.  “We have to protect these public lands and compensate the communities that help maintain them.  Fully funding programs, like PILT, will simultaneously safeguard the wilderness and allow our communities to thrive.”

Nearly 1,900 counties across 49 states receive PILT funding to compensate for lost tax revenue due to the large amounts of federal lands in their counties, which are un-taxable according to federal law. A breakdown of the payments by state and county can be found here.

In a letter sent to House leadership, Polis and Stewart wrote, “If Congress fails to fully fund the PILT program by the end of the year, public lands counties across the nation will be unable to provide essential public services such as: law enforcement, search and rescue, public health and critical transportation infrastructure.”

Current PILT funding must be extended within Fiscal Year 2017 appropriations.

Stewart and Polis also urged leadership to enact a fiscally responsible, long-term and sustainable solution to fully fund the program beyond next year.
