Polis leads opposition against Republican rollback of consumer privacy protections for internet usersWASHINGTON: Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., led opposition today against a Republican move to rollback consumer privacy protections for internet users. Republicans stripped existing rules that require broadband internet service providers to notify customers before selling off their personal information. Broadband Internet Service Providers have access to customer information ranging from physical location to shopping habits and beyond. “While Republicans are talking loudly about fake wiretapping and make-believe spying microwaves, they are taking action to erode the privacy of anyone who uses the internet. Today, disappointingly, Republicans chose to allow broadband internet providers to sell off your personal information without your permission. Lawmakers who voted in favor of this bill just sold out the American people to special interests,” said Polis. Watch Polis’s remarks today in the House of Representatives. Polis has been a leading cosponsor of many bills aimed at defending the open internet and protecting individuals’ right to privacy, including: the Email Privacy Act, which protects American’s online communications from warrantless government searches; the Student Digital Privacy and Parental Rights Act, the most significant federal attempt to protect student data in decades; and the SPEAK FREE Act, which would enhance free speech protection for consumers on the internet.
