House of Representatives launches bipartisan Outdoor Recreation Caucus, citing vitality of outdoor recreation economy
Polis and Simpson to Co-Chair
WASHINGTON: Today, Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., and Mike Simpson, R-ID., launched the first ever Outdoor Recreation Caucus (HORC) in the House of Representatives. The HORC will promote policies that invest in the outdoor industry, and will educate lawmakers on how outdoor recreation is an integral economic driver for local and regional economies in every part of the country.
“Outdoor recreation is a critical and vibrant facet to our nation’s economy and lifestyle,” Polis said. “The House Outdoor Recreation Caucus will advance an understanding of the benefits of outdoor recreation, and the substantial economic activity that comes with it, which can be seen in every state and district across the country. As a representative from Colorado, where the outdoor industry is so prominent, I am proud to be a Co-Chair of the House Outdoor Recreation Caucus, and I look forward to finding commonsense solutions to protect and expand this industry. Discovering new ways to protect our lands and make it easier for everyone to access our outdoor activities, while growing our economy has always been, and will remain, a top priority of mine.”
“For many years, I’ve worked to protect the land and water for the benefit of Idahoans now and for years to come,” said Congressman Mike Simpson. “We are seeing now more than ever the importance of wild places, rivers, ski resorts, trails and greenspaces in recruiting and retaining businesses and a skilled workforce. I’m proud to be establishing the first-ever House Outdoor Recreation Caucus to help educate members of Congress on the economic value of recreation on our trails and greenspaces in Idaho and throughout the nation.”
The outdoor recreation economy directly contributes $887 billion in consumer spending annually and employs over 7.6 million Americans according to a new study release by the Outdoor Industry Association. Given this economic heft, HORC will ensure the outdoor industry continues to grow and thrive, helping local and regional economies and encouraging activities that bolster America’s land and water that support outdoor recreation.
The HORC will host its first lunch briefing, called: Outdoor Recreation and Prosperous Communities in 485 Russell Senate Office Building on Thursday, April 27 from 12:00 - 1:15pm ET. In 2010, the Senate established their Outdoor Recreation Caucus, and Sen. Jim Risch, R-ID., and Sen. Mark Heinrich, D-N.M., serve as co-chairs.
