Polis statement on the Speaker’s immigration bill
Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., rejected another Republican attempt to write Pres. Trump’s vile immigration tactics into law today. The House of Representatives overwhelmingly defeated a bill by Spkr. Paul Ryan, R-Wisc.
“Speaker Ryan can’t get the body he presides over to pass his bill because he hasn’t bothered to get consensus (or even input) from reasonable Republicans and Democrats. He is choosing instead to only ‘collaborate’ with lawmakers directly aligned with Pres. Trump and his immigration adviser Stephen Miller,” said Polis. “We cannot simply write Pres. Trump’s vile immigration policies into law. The American people don’t want families torn apart. Let’s rise above partisan games and legislate without using children to extort the American people. Many of us lawmakers who have been left out of negotiations stand ready with solutions already written into bills. We are just waiting for Speaker Ryan to give us a fair hearing.”
The Ryan bill leaves many Dreamers behind, drastically cuts legal immigration, prevents asylum seekers from having their claims heard, funds Pres. Trump’s border wall, and militarizes the border.
Polis has been a consummate champion for fixing our broken immigration system to align with American values since joining Congress. In October 2013, he introduced the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, a bill that would have improved national security, streamlined our country’s guest worker system, and created a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented individuals. The Congressional Budget Office estimated that the bill would have reduced the deficit by nearly $200 billion over ten years. The bipartisan Senate companion of this landmark bill passed in June 2013 and was widely heralded as one of the most significant attempts at comprehensive immigration reform in decades.
